Design and technology Intent

Design Technology (DT) is an essential contributor to our society and culture, and improves our daily lives and wellbeing. The DT curriculum at Derwentwater gives our children a deeper understanding and appreciation of how the world works, whilst also gaining skills to design, make and evaluate functional products.

Much like Art, we aim for our DT lessons to be as child-led and practical as possible, allowing for independent and creative thinking. Derwentwater’s DT curriculum provides children with the skills and opportunities to make products, whether it is a problem to be solved or a particular service or need. Throughout their time at Derwentwater, our children will have practical experiences to use a variety of tools and techniques.

DT is taught during DT week every term. Each year group is given a design brief, and the week is planned following a three-step process; design - make - evaluate. The children will draw upon their mathematical, scientific, artistic and computing skills to inform their learning and product. Alongside this, we aim for our children to be introduced to high-quality designs and influential designers who have helped shape our world.

Through DT, our children will learn to be brave, take risks, and become critical and innovative thinkers - skills which will help them in the wider world.
